About
Background
This blog was created for the Spring 2015 "STJS: Doing Fieldwork in Japan" course at J.F. Oberlin University.
Purpose
The purpose of this blog is to act as a field diary for "STJS: Doing Fieldwork in Japan", with the intention of recording content from interviews, and keeping track of photographs, pamphlets, maps, memos, etc. while also keeping record of my original analysis and interpretation of the data gathered, thoughts, feelings, and trajectory of our field activities throughout the semester. The field diary will document my team's fieldwork and things we/I have learned throughout the course and also link to social scientific data that is relevant to our research and our fieldwork theme.
Focus
For our research theme, we decided to focus on
"Keeping Traditions in the Face of Constant Change" while also trying to discover
strategies in how those traditions are kept.
We are focusing on small shops that are (for the most part) privately owned, family-run shops that are related to the stereotypical idea of "tradition" in some way, for example wagashi (和菓子), kimono (着物), and tea (お茶), as well as privately owned shops selling fish (魚屋さん) as opposed to the modernized supermarkets, and restaurants such as sushi (お寿司) and eel (うなぎ), etc.
